San Miguel de Allende hosted a theoretical and practical workshop on the development of green infrastructure and rain gardens as an example of a nature-based solution. The event was convened by several local and national organizations and a border association from Arizona.
At the national level the event was promoted and financed by Fondo Mexicano para la Conservación de la Naturaleza, A.C., at the regional level by Rio Arronte and at the local level by Salvemos al Río Laja, A.C., Caminos de Agua, A.C. and several federal, state and local government agencies.
The work was carried out over 3 days: November 28, 29 and 30, 2022, with attendance of groups from different cities in Mexico. The practical implementation took place in the Ejido Agustín González in the municipality of San Miguel de Allende.
The principles that can be applied in environments located in neighborhoods, workplaces, community centers, churches, schools, are of general application and are generously explained in two downloadable booklets, at the end of this article. They are bilingual materials provided by the Watershed Management Group of Tucson, Arizona.
The challenge is to provide areas with green infrastructure that can be optimized for rainwater retention by observing the basics of how the water cycle works in watersheds. Watersheds at the micro level are suggested for the sites described above.
